Dear Senator Flake,
I am not so much surprised that someone shot down the Malaysian Boeing 777 passenger jet over Ukraine, as I am that the airline thought it was safe to fly over a war zone where each side was armed with surface to air missile systems?
I believe that we need to advise international commercial airliners with routes in Europe not to fly over Ukrainian airspace!
According to the US State Department it is believed that a Russian made SA 11 or SA 20 SAM system brought down the airliner. As you know these radar guided missile systems have a range of anywhere from 12-15 miles.
The average commercial airliner flies at around 35,000 ft or 7 miles.
So you can see this was always a real possibility, especially in a nation like Ukraine, which is in the midst of a bloody and violent civil war.
Sincerely
Robert Tilford
