Anime Review of Night Head Genesis

Night Head Genesis" is a Japanese anime series that spans for twenty-four episodes as it revolves around ESP which is your paranormal senses. It had aired on the Japanese TV network channels "Animax", "BS Japan", and "GyaO". It is directed by Yoshio Takeuchi.

In the beginning, it is explained that the brain has a lot of potential but seventy percent of the human brain is unused. The unused percentage is called the "night head genesis." By delving into that area of the human brain, one could unlock all sorts of potential powers and abilities. It’s established that Night Head Genesis will revolve around psychic powers such as telepathy and telekinesis. The series protagonists are two brothers named: Naoto and Naoya who have displayed so much psychic potential.

The two of them seem to be grasping their powers. Naoto gets withdrawn from school because his psychic abilities had made another student bleed through the nose. Naoya had made several people pass out. Then, their melon soda gets drugged by the parents. While passed out, the parents give the two of them not knowing how to deal with the two sons hand them off to a research center. It’s a very tragic beginning as the both Naoto and Naoya are separated from their parents. This is a very heartbreaking and angst-filled beginning as Naoto curses the parents for leaving them. He displays his psychic powers again by making the window break before he is gassed to sleep.

While at the research center, the two of them are monitored, tested, and experimented on. Naoto is able to telepathically communicate with his brother. But he has the power of psychokinesis enabling him to destroy nearby objects. At the research center, Naoto breaks free and enters the dining room where he displays an act of violence by destroying the windows, cups, and everything else. But he still has Naoya while still angry at his parents for throwing them out. With a fiery tempter, it makes Naoto a very dangerous individual. He has the most destructive potential but depends on Naoya to keep himself from going out of control.

Naoya has the ability of clairvoyance along with the power to heal. He curses those powers as they are the source of his pain and suffering. With his powers, Naoya is very much robbed of the ability of physical contact. By touching people or objects, Naoya can get traumatic visions that put him in a catatonic state. Their powers are very different but both siblings need to depend on each other.

They find parent figures in Mikuriya who is the head of the research center and Elder Misaki who is a very powerful psychic responsible for the barrier. Mikuriya is like the father figure while Elder Misaki is like the grandfather figure.

Halfway through the first episode, Elder Misaki passes away and the barrier that kept people from coming in and getting how has disappeared. This is where the real adventure and story of Night Head Genesis begins. As the barrier disappears, Naoto and Naoya take their chance and escape. But Naoya feels that Elder Masaki has been watching them the whole time.

Night Head Genesis presents the interesting premise on how secret organizations gather people with psychic potential. It also reveals that there are people that cannot control their powers and that there are people that use their powers for evil intentions such as greed, revenge, and so forth. The series also focuses on how the two of them try to hone and control their powers. In a sense, it’s like "Pretender" but dealing with psychics.

Throughout the series, they will encounter people hunting them down. They will interact with psychics: good, bad, and neutral. Everything will round down to this one very significant event called the "Upheaval." At the same time, they try to keep their powers in check while blending into everyday society. Throughout the series, the two of them have to live a life of "obscurity" to remain hidden from people that want to take them back.

This series focuses around a bunch of genres such as the supernatural, horror, mystery, and science fiction. There seems to be some influences from "Akira" due to people wielding psychic potential.

If you’re into researching psychic abilities, you may enjoy Night Head Genesis. There is no English-dubbed version out yet. No company has purchased the North American license for it either as it seems. It’s unknown if and when Night Heat Genesis will officially be released to North America.
