Anime Review of Tenjou Tenge

"Tenjou Tenge" is one of the popular martial arts and fighting oriented Japanese anime as it runs for twenty-four episodes. It’s one of the many anime titles that have a lot of high school fights as a means for students to take over the school by force. The two main protagonists are Souichiro Nagi and Bob Makihara whom have been longtime friends who have succeeded taking over schools by fighting and beating everybody in the past which reflected for most of their lives. But it’s not the case when the two of them start school at Todou Academy. It’s a sign that there will be plenty of martial arts fighting as Nagi and Bob start things off by kicking around the student body prompting the arrival of Maya Natsume and Masataka Takayanagi two of the most powerful students of the school.

Though Maya initially looks like an elementary school she reveals herself to be no pushover. Her real form is of a buxom full grown seventeen year old. The boys of the school tend to get excited when Maya reveals her true form. In that form, Maya reveals her true power and she sends Souichiro out from the second or third story window and crashing into the girl’s shower. There, he inadvertently locks lips with Maya’s equally buxom younger sister Aya. Instantaneously, Aya falls in love with Souichiro much to his chagrin.

The next day, he fights off with Takayanagi again. It’s revealed that Takayanagi had mastered use of ki and is much stronger than Souichiro. Handed his first defeat in life, Souichiro doubts himself and thinks about his past. It’s revealed that he was constantly picked on as a child and was forced to fight. It is also revealed that the high school was created to revive the martial arts. Due to the nature of the school, Bob and Souichiro realize the reasons a good number of students at the school are very skilled fighters.

The story picks up as the school president sends enforcers to go after both Souichiro and Bob. Ryuzaki, one of the enforcers torches Bob’s bike and assaults his girlfriend Chiaki. Souichiro and Bob are easily defeated by Ryuzaki. Aya arrives to the rescue but is also easily defeated by Ryuzaki. As a result, Souichiro and Bob train under Maya vowing to be stronger than everybody else in three months. The two of them end up joining the Juuken Club which is the opposing force to the Enforcers.

The series is merely an arc in the story as the rest carries on in the manga that is still ongoing. This arc mainly focuses around getting stronger to defeat the enforcers who "reign" supreme over the school. Enforcers are powerful in their own right making them a very formidable and threatening group.

For people that practice the martial arts and enjoy fighting games will probably enjoy watching Tenjou Tenge. There is so much fighting in each other that will keep any viewer satisfied until the next episode. The opening sequences are pretty humorous as the five main characters are doing a dance routine.

Though there may be a dubbed version, it’s an anime series that is hard to find online to buy. But it’s unknown if and when this series will be released to regular North American networks. For the series, the enforcers of Todou Academy remain the major antagonists. Tenjou Tenge remains a great anime that is packed with plenty of martial arts action.
