Announcement of election date, and detention of Muhtarima Benazir Bhutto

Muhtarima Benazir Bhutto is detained in her residence in Islamabad today  on Friday 9-11-2007. She was bound to address a rally in historical Liaqat Bagh of Rawalpindi today, and her party arranged a rally to protest against imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan.

The opinion of the Islamabad administration is that as a security measure, Bhutto is detained in her home for her own safety since yesterday a local news paper revealed that eight suicide bombers had entered into Islamabad. A Heavy contingent of police including an armed car was deployed to a street in front of her residence in Islamabad, and all the routes leading to Liaqat Bagh, where rally is to be held, are blocked and thousands of policemen stand ready at entry points of the rally site. Despite her detention in her residence she is determined to hold the rally. Her party leader, Mr. Amin Fahim, has said that in any case his party workers will reach Liaqat Bagh today.

President General Parvez Musharaf has said that elections in Pakistan will be held around the 15th of February next year, and he will doff his uniform too. The announcement came yesterday after a meeting of National Security Council.
