Annual Spituk Monastery Festival (Gustor) begins in Leh

Leh, January 09(Scoop News) –The two days annual Spituk Monastery  Festival (Gustor) began today with great religious fervor at Spituk monastery amidst huge public gathering including few foreign tourists despite the nail biting cold weather.

Accoeding to t angchuk,ADIL the festival is usually held during the 11th month of Tibetan calendar and it marks the victory of virtue over evil. As procedure, the highlight of the festival is the mask dance performed by the monks of the Spituk monastery representing the guardians, protectors and the gods and goddesses and prayers in different forms are offered for the betterment of mankind.

Spituk Gompa (monastery), that dates back to the 11th century, is located  atop a hill, overlooking the River Indus, around 8 kilometres from Leh, the District Headquarters of Ladakh. This annual festival of the monastery marks the beginning of winter festivals in Ladakh region and it is believed that passed this festival the freezing temperature begins to rise and weather starts to become better and warmer.
