Ladybugs are a known enemy of Aphids, but Which One is Right for Aquaponics?
Ladybugs are easy to identify, they are brightly colored with spots and have round bodies. Ladybugs are a natural enemy of the aphid, so they are great to have on hand to protect your plants. However, you need to be careful where your ladybugs come from, especially if you are buying them from a breeder.
In the February 2014 edition of the ASC magazine, contributing writer Stephen A Jones gave us a few tips on what to look out for. Here is what Stephen said “Before purchasing any ladybeetle from a garden shop or breeder, ask some questions first. Find out what species of ladybeetle is caught and the wild capture program most sellers have. You are specifically looking to find out about parasite infections on the bugs. Some of these parasites only attack ladybeetles.” https://www.facebook.com/AquaponicsSurvivalCommunities
Whilst ladybugs are great for pest control, you need to be careful about the potential parasites and diseases they may carry. These parasites and diseases can affect the life of your ladybugs, especially if they have been bred in captivity. Two of the things you will be looking for are a parasite known as Dinocampus coccinellae and a disease called Microsporidia. The parasite comes from the braconid wasp the uses the ladybug as a host for its eggs. Microsporidia is a disease that will shorten the life of the ladybug and can reduce its egg laying capacity. http://aquaponics-how-to-guide.info/aquanewsletter/
There is no denying that ladybugs are a good thing to have around the garden and in your Aquaponics systems. Just be aware that a small percentage of them may be affected with diseases and parasites like any other living organism. If you want to read the full article, then please subscribe to our magazine.
