Everyone starts out on even footing, somewhat, fans dream of the possibility to take that victory lap on Week 19 or sooner. That is what hopes for their team when a new season starts.

Expectations are built up througohut the winter break and now it is time to put up or shut up. Some made some important statements and others were left with their proverbial tails between their legs, licking their wounds.

Ricardo Lavolpe and Diego Simeone sent a message to everyone saying that they were going to be in the fight until the end. Both squads came out on top in their respective matches on Friday night. Lavolpe´s men played with ten men for 88 minutes and were still able to come out on top against a scrappy Colón side looking to reverse their fortunes from the past year.

Teams like Tigre and San Martín began their first division existence with impressive wins against squads that desperately need. San Martín shocked Argentinos at the Diego Maradona, while Tigre´s win was scripted in such fashion that it was the most romatic of victories this week. Gimnasia did everything they could, but a goal by Diego Cagna´s crew changed the outcome of the match.

Cagna´s former team, Boca Juniors, wasa shell of itself as they had nothing against a Rosario Central side that had more opportunities. The clearest was when Zelaya came inches away from erasing a 17- year drought at La Bombonera, but missed the ocean while standing at the edge of the pier.

Another one of Cagna´s teams, Independiente, was the most dominant team as Daniel Montenegro and company outscored Lanús in a 5-3 shootout.

The biggest loss was tht of defending champ San Lorenzo, who were knocked off in the 89th minute by a Newell´s side playing a man down. Leonel Vagnioni, on a deadly counterattack burned an overly aggressive San Lorenzo side for their first loss in six matches.
