Around each island is a coral reef which encompasses the lagoon. These lagoons are about 15 to 20 feet deep, their waters are crystal clear and, at the bottom of each lagoon, one can see the most exquisite flower-like corals. These corals have most beautiful colors and swimming in and out of them are millions of multicolored fish.
Coral Growth
very few people in India know that the Laccadives are coral islands, and fewer still what coral islands look like. Each of them rises from the Arabian sea and surface into the deep blue water. around the island is the coral reef, which encompasses a lagoon, protecting it from the turbulence of the ocean outside. The water in the lagoon is crystal clear and, at the bottom, never more than 15 feet deep, you can sea flower -like coral growths, around which tiny fish lurk. For a visitor, fortunate enough to cruise on an administration motor-boat in the lagoon, an islander will dive into the water and emerge with a `branch’ of coral, cut off the bottom with a knife.
