Today is United States Election Day 2008, where it will either been Democratic Presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois or GOP Presidential nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona who will be elected the next US President. However, all of the focus should not be placed on that race.
There are other intense races taking place on Election Day. In the case of California, there is Proposition 8 campaign. Should Proposition 8 pass, a ban on same-sex marriage will be placed in the state constitution. So far, this campaign has been the costliest in California.
While there is the US Presidential race, there are 11 governor races to keep track of.
The following states that have governor elections are: Washington, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, Vermont, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Utah, and West Virginia.
In Washington, it is incumbent Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire vs. GOP nominee Dino Rossi. Rossi is a former state senator.
In North Carolina it is Democratic nominee Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue vs. GOP nominee Pat McCrory. This is a contest to keep a close eye on due to the significance.
If Perdue is elected, she will be the first female governor of NC.
If McCrory is elected, he will be the first GOP governor of NC in over 100 years.
In Missouri, it is Democratic nominee Jay Nixon vs. GOP nominee Kenny Hulshof.
Nixon is the current Missouri state attorney general and Hulshof is a six-term congressman.
In Indiana, it is incumbent GOP Governor Mitch Daniels vs. Democratic nominee Jill Long Thompson. Thompson is a former three-term congresswoman. This is another race to keep a close eye on.
Indiana looks to be up for grabs between Obama and McCain. Perhaps it may help Thompson out. Also, there is the possibly of capitalizing on Daniels’ ties to current United States President George W. Bush.
However, Thompson did not do as well in past elections.
In Vermont, it is incumbent GOP Governor Jim Douglas vs. Democratic nominee Gaye Symington vs. Independent nominee Anthony Polina. There is a strong indication that Polina could be an election spoiler.
In Delaware, it is Democratic nominee Jack Markell vs. GOP nominee Bill Lee.
In Montana, it is incumbent Democratic Governor Brian Schweitzer vs. GOP nominee Roy Brown.
In New Hampshire, it is incumbent Democratic Governor John Lynch vs. GOP nominee Joe Kenney. Kenney is a state senator.
In North Dakota, it is incumbent GOP Governor John Hoeven vs. Democratic nominee Tim Mathern. Mathern is a state senator.
In Utah, it is incumbent GOP Governor John Huntsman vs. Democratic nominee Bob Springmeyer.
Finally in West Virginia, it is incumbent Democratic Governor Joe Manchin vs. GOP nominee Russ Weeks. Weeks is a former state senator.
These are some of the other campaign races to pay close attention to today on US Election Day 2008.
