A drive of 51 km from Trivandrum along the road to Quilon in the north, with a slight detour to the left, takes the tourist to Varkala. From the tall massive cliffs along the sea coast trickles out rich mineral springs. A sea bath followed by a fresh water wash in the springs is an exhilarating experience. The temple of Janardana (Lord Vishnu) at Varkala is an important center of Hindu pilgrimage. The place also has importance as the Samadhi of Sri Narayana Guru atop hill called Sivagiri. Sivagiri is also as a fine temple and the Ashram is established by the Guru.
The seaside resort of Cannanore is reached from Calicut by rail 90 km road 87 km. although if does not come under any spotlight, Cannanore is a town of great historical significance. It was the capital of the Kolathiri Rajha, chief of the Zamorin in Malabar. It has an excellent port which was used by the Arabs and the Persians, besides an imposing fort built by the Portuguese.
At a height 912 meters above sea level, Sultan’s Battery 97 km from Calicut nestles among the coffee –producing hill of Wynad and Lakkidi. A few miles from here is Perumanam Kotta where the Pashasi Raja his strong hold till the fort was captured bt the British in 1805.
