American women spend an average of $100 per month on beauty products and treatments, studies suggest. If saved and invested for five years, the same amount would pay for a full year of tuition and fees at a public college.
From manicures to pedicures, haircuts to hair colors, waxing to bleaching treatments, these packages add up over the years and have the capacity to make a big dent in every woman’s pocketbook. We spoke with Tricia Perry, a Certified Professional Electrolysis practitioner and founder of Ayromist, New York City’s leading electrolysis spa, about which beauty treatments are worth it.
We hear electrolysis is expensive. Is it true?
Ayromist: Electrolysis is a long-term investment, and when viewed as such it has a permanent impact on a woman’s appearance and perhaps even more importantly, her self-image. For women who are accustomed to daily plucking (please don’t!), or weekly waxing, and always worrying about unwanted hair showing, to have this problem permanently removed is, Tricia Perry says, a priceless experience. Remember, too, Tricia Perry says, that laser treatments are often very pricey, and only offer temporary hair reduction, whereas electrolysis lasts forever.
Is electrolysis painful?
Ayromist: It’s not significantly more painful than waxing or plucking, and certainly no more painful than laser treatments. A person’s sensitivity and responsiveness to pain ranges, and also depends on the area of the body being treated, Tricia Perry says.
How many electrolysis treatments does electrolysis take to work?
Ayromist: It depends on the woman, on how much hair is present in a given area, and on the woman’s history of hair removal. Women with a long history of waxing and/or plucking are at risk of having problems such as ingrown hair. But regardless, we work with each client to make sure they’re receiving the treatments they need.
What are the most sensitive and/or common areas for electrolysis?
Ayromist: The most sensitive area for women is usually the upper lip, and it’s also one of the most common requests we see, so unlike other NYC electrolysis spas, we take extra measures at Ayromist Spa to make sure women receiving treatment on this area are comfortable. Other areas of the body are less sensitive—many women get their legs done, bikini area, chin, and arm pits, without much discomfort at all.
