A 10-month-old baby of Kuppam in Chittoor district died a day after being vaccinated for measles at a private medical college hospital. She was identified as Amudha, daughter of Latha, a resident of Urban Colony in Elavai Kothapalli panchayat. The death occurred on April 24, but officials kept it under wraps initially. Health department sources said that the vaccine given to the baby was manufactured by Serum Institute of India Ltd based at Pune and belonged to batch number MVV 1574.
Following the death of the baby in Chittoor, the state government has decided not to use this vaccine.
The Centre has already stopped the use of vaccine ‘Abhay-M’ manufactured by the Human Biological Institute of Immunologicals Ltd following the death of four children in Tamil Nadu recently. It had instead allowed states to use the measles vaccine supplied by Serum Institute of India
