Several weeks ago, China was struck by an earthquake with the magnitude of 7.9. Many people were killed as a result of the earthquake and many structures were damaged in the process. Before the earthquake took place, China was on the receiving end of international criticism for its brutal crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Tibet.
Unlike Burma’s junta, China had happily accepted foreign aid. In addition, China made the initiative to help out with its own reconstruction. Coincidentally, the earthquake was caused by a shift in tectonic plates at the Tibetan plateau.
Recently, Hollywood actress Sharon Stone criticized China for its treatment of Tibet. She had said that China suffered the earthquake due to bad karma. Stone implied that China deserved the earthquake.
That had brought forth much backlash. Ng See-Yuen, the founder of the UME Cinplex chain had moved to ban all films by Stone at all of his theaters. This chain is very dominant in China. Stone had hurt herself by that remark about the earthquake.
However, it does not end here.
Next week will be the Shanghai Film Festival. In the previous year, Stone was Christian Dior’s image ambassador. The bad karma remark caused the cosmetic juggernaut to remove all ads throughout China that featured the actress.
According to the Chinese media, Stone will not be invited to the Shanghai Film Festival. The reports add that Stone will be banned indefinitely from attending future film festivals in China.
Stone has very much hurt her image in Asia for the remark.
