Bali’s global warming conference sends mixed signals

The world is getting mixed signals from the Bali climate change forum. And everything seemed not going pretty well between developed and developing countries in so far as limiting the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere are concerned.

However, the European Union has already signified its intention by cracking down on automakers that exceed accepted standards. Or else they would face hefty fnes under the EU plan, which calls on car manufacturers to limit car emissions in Europe by 2012.

In the United States, sixteen states have answered the call of Bali and the Kyoto Protocol, even after they had been facing resistance from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is supposed to be the lead agency in the environment’s fight against global warming.

One of the victims of the EPA’s ire is the state of California, after the federal agency, thorugh the mandate from the White House, had rejected its bid to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. For state officials, the rejection was slap on their faces as it has impacted on the state government’s plan to at least contribute in the world’s call for minimizing the hazardous effects of global warming on the environment.

The EPA reasoned out that the state’s greenhouse standards are already embodied in the federal government’s energy bill. Unconvinced, state officials have committed to take the case to court, which to many constituents would be a long battle to win. Now, there are reports that even if Congress is able to craft legislation that would regulate greenhouse emissions, it is suspected that it won’t survive a presidential veto, the Los Angeles Times report said.
