The 60-day ban on fishing activity which came into affect on Tuesday will not only make nearly 30,000 fishermen in the district jobless, but disturb the rhythm of life of fishermen in 100-odd villages in the district.
The hardship this time is further accentuated for two reasons, the increase in the number of days from 45 to 60 days and eliminating the exemption that was given to native boats previously.
According to officials of the Fisheries Department there are 3,525 boats (motorized and not) and 29,000 active fishermen in the district.
