Barry Blitt, the cartoonist behind the controversial cover of this week’s New York Magazine featuring Barack and Michelle Obama as terrorists, spoke to The Huffington Post about his cover in an article published today. The cartoon, called "Politics of Fear" features Barack Obama, dressed in Arabian/Muslim clothing, fist-pounding Michelle Obama who is wearing army boots and has a machine gun slung around her shoulder. The pair is standing in the oval office with a portrait of Osama Bin Laden hung above a fire place where an American flag is burning.
According to Barry Blitt and New Yorker editor Dave Remnick, the cartoon is not a satire on the Obamas but on the fact that people could actually believe they were unpatriotic, much less terrorists. "I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous," Barry Blitt said.
Barry Blitt has been the artist behind a number of controversial New Yorker covers, but none has stirred up controversy as much as this week’s.
