Jammu, March 28 (Scoop News) – About 63 tonnes of Basmati rice have been exported to different countries including USA and Middle East for the first time from J&K.
This information was given by the Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan in Legislative Council today while replying to a question by Ajay Kumar Sadhotra.
The Minister said that Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department of Commerce, has issued notification on August 17, 2010 allowing the export of high grade Basmati rice grown in Jammu region of the Ste.
Mir said the total quantity of Basmati sent outside the state during 2010-11, ending January, 2011, is 2, 19, 928 quintals. He said the approximate value of the Basmati rice sent outside the state during 2010-1, ending January, 2011, would be of the order of Rs. 109.96 crore, calculated at Rs. 5000 per quintal.
The Minister said though details are not available with the state government some private players had received orders from USA for the export of Basmati.
While replying to Supplementaries raised by Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Murtaza Khan, the Minister said that a comprehensive Basmati Mission Project for the proper marketing and other related activities has been sent to Centre for clearance. He also said that several buyer seller meets have been organized so that the exports both nationally as well as internationally get a boost.
