It is unfortunate to note that the IPL Cricket series which began well with a bang with all its pomp and glory has been marred with a controversial and ugly incident involving two Indian cricketors, Harbajan Singh and Sreesanth, the former slapping the latter at the Mohali Cricket Ground, after the match between Mumbai XI and Punjab XI was won by Punjab XI. IPL on its own conducted an enquiry with the match referee Farook Engineer who imposed a ban of eleven IPL matches for Harbajan Singh, besides forfeiting 100 % match-fee and giving a warning to Sreesanth. However, the matter did not end there.
After the episode involving the cricket players like Harbajan and Sreesanth, BCCI was under fire that it did not exercise enough control over its players or did not have a proper mechanism to regulate the players behaviour. Hence, the Board of Cricket Control of India has appointed its own commission under one Nanavathi, an advocate by profession, to hold an enquiry into the Harbajan Singh episode.
The Nanavathi Commission will hold an enquiry into the Harbajan Singh and Sreesanth episode by summoning the respective players and officials and submit a detailed report to the BCCI President, Mr.Sharad Pawar. The BCCI may even embark upon a counseling programme to the cricket players who do not have a formal education.
The appointment of Nanavathi Commission by the BCCI reveals the sincerity of its purpose and intention to regulate the on field behaviour of the cricket players taking their level of education into account and it augurs well for the future of cricket, as a prominent sport in India.
