"How can I just shake your hand? Come here and give me a hug!" Of course what was expected to be a heated battle between individuals that were complimentary at the height of their respective lives. For Diego Maradona and Guillermo Coppola their lives intersected after 1986 and throughout his days in Napoli and as his career fell into a precipice that was led down that path because of his addictive personality. One personality fed another one- in this case the Argentine media- who continue to have a voracious appetite for all things related to the former Boca and Napoli idol.
These were the words that Guillermo Coppola said to Diego Maradona at the 9th Commercial Court at Marcelo T. Alvear 1840 on Wednesday. This court date was set up in an effort to settle the differences between the two as far as economic issues were concerned. Based on many individuals, Coppola was an enabler during Maradona’s dark days. He was also the reason why the Argentine demigod encountered tremendous economic problems- or so El Diego thought.
When he went into the in Buenos Aires section of Tribunales, he was advised by his attorney as well as ex-wife Claudia Villafañe to drop the suit as the bills, procedures, and legal documents were all in order. According to Maradona a few years ago, he felt "betrayed" by Coppola. He was convinced by several people close to him that it was his former agent that led to his demise.
All of this turned to mush when the mediating judge turned to both parties and allowed them to talk for five minutes. "Five minutes?" , was what Maradona said according to a reporter on Mariano Closs’ show on radio station La Red Wednesday evening who happened to be covering the proceedings. "We are going to need all day to catch up (after four years of not seeing each other)."
Obviously, not everything ended up rosy as the press hounded the former World Cup winner and he had to fight his way out of the courthouse.
