Are you ready to march with the greatest fictional detective – Sherlock Holmes – history has known on crime thrillers? If so, then this book ‘Best of Sherlock Holmes’ is for you. It comprises of ten best stories selected from the ones originally written by Sir Arther Conan Doyle in the late 19th and early 20th Century and retold for young readers by M K Parthasarathy, the renowned author with 90 published books to his credit and the first writer from the Indian subcontinent to join the high-profile International Crime Writer’s Association, London in 1986.
The language has been simplified for younger lot of readers, but the essence of the original stories remains uncompromised. Black and white illustrations have been provided to complement each story. The book includes:
1. A Scandal In Bohemia
2. The Boscombe Valley Mystery
3. The Gloria Scott
4. The Crooked Man
5. The Adventure of The Dancing Men
6. The Adventure of The Abbey Grange
7. The Adventure of The Cardboard Box
8. The Adventure of The Mazarin Stone
9. The Adventure of The Three Gables
10.The Adventure of The Three Garridebs
Here’s a brief of the first two stories in this collection:
* A Scandal in Bohemia – After some brilliant detective work involving disguises and acting, Holmes gets outwitted by the woman Irene Adler in his quest to help the hereditary king of Bohemia regain a scandalous photograph from her.
* The Boscombe Valley Mystery – Charles McCarthy’s son appears the obvious murderer of his father following a violent quarrel. Now it is up to Holmes to find out that the murder has its real roots in the Australian past of the dead man and his landlord.
And so goes the rest of the stories full of thrill and surprise. Honestly, I could go on and write highlights from each of the stories, but that would tantamount to spilling the beans and dismiss your fun party even before you have begun to read this book.
The stories are complete within themselves, so if you missed you could still move on to the next one without missing out any plot. Sherlock Holmes solves mysteries through logic, and quite often just has to hear out a case to determine what happened. He is famous for his large magnifying glass, his tall figure, and of course his pipe.
Occasionally you may guess early what is going to happen but, nevertheless, you still want to read to see what happens next.
If you love mysteries you need to give this book ‘Best of Sherlock Holmes an honest try. It’s highly readable, and well worth a go. You sure will have your monies worth.
