Beware if you are eating a lot of red meat and processed meat. It may increase your chances of developing several types of cancer particularly bowel and lung cancer, according to a new study. Researchers led by Amanda Cross at the US National Cancer Institute came to this conclusion after studying the data involving nearly half a million people aged between 50-71.
Participants – none of whom had had cancer previously – completed a questionnaire about their dietary habits over the previous year.
People whose red meat intake was in the top fifth of the range of intakes had an increased risk of developing bowel, liver, lung and oesophageal cancer compared to those in the lowest fifth of consumption, reported health portal Medical News Today.
People in the highest fifth of processed meat intake faced increased risks of developing colorectal and lung cancer.
The results provided evidence that people who eat a lot of red and processed meats have greater risk of developing colorectal and lung cancer than people who eat small quantities.
However, exactly which type of meat causes which type of cancer remains unclear. Since most study participants were non-Hispanic white, the findings may not apply to people with different genetic backgrounds, experts said.
