Residents of the central town of Sibu are advised to be extra careful in their daily activities so as not to attract attention to themselves and their residence. There are cases of a gang of criminal consisting of about seven or eight members. They are believed to be foreigners and are armed.
The Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shafiee Ismail, said that up till now this gang have harmed two of their victims. Both incidents happened in the town of Durin whch is about half an hour’s ride from here.
ACP Shafiee was speaking at the launching ceremony of The Crime Prevention Committee for Li Hua Island on the outskirt of Sibu.
The launching of the Crime Prevention Committee was duly officiated by Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew who is also the member of Parliament for Sibu town constituency. Among the dignitaries presents were Dr Gregory Hii, the Managing Director of Hock Peng Organisation, Datuk Toh Chiew Hock..
ACP Shafiee told the people that the Police force needed the cooperation of the people to provide them with the much needed information. The gang always targett the rich and wealthy.
On another note ACP Shafiee told the press that up to now 2, 700 criminal cases have been reported, an increase from 2,400 the year before. The most cases reported are motorcycle and automobile theft.
The number of cases are considerably small when compared to places like Johore Bahru, he added. However the public must always help the police and report any peculiar happenings in their vicinity.
