BGSBU concern over removal of Arabic and Persian from UPSC exams
Rajouri/Jammu, September 12 (Scoop News)- Following removal of Arabic and Persian subjects by Union Public Service Commission for competitive examinations, faculty members, students and other staff of Department of Arabic in BGSB University expressed deep anguish over it and submitted by post resolution to President of India to intervene and get these subjects re-inducted for UPSC examinations.
BGSB University’s Arabic department faculty and students hold a meeting under the chairmanship of Dr Shamas Kamal Anjum, Head Department of Arabic to condemn the attitude of UPSC with regard to Arabic and Persian languages. Dr Shamas has also initiated a signature campaign in support of re-inducting these subjects for UPSC examinations and said that this step has hurt thousands of aspirants who opted these subjects for UPSC examinations.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shamas Kamal Anjum said that decision to remove Arabic language sounds unconvincing and shocking and needs urgent reconsideration. He said that the department feel that the higher authorities should come forward and intervene so that the decision could be rectified and the previous status of Arabic and Persian languages in the Civil Services Examinations could be restored.
Terming Arabic and Persian languages as integral part of Indian languages and culture, Dr Kamal said that in 1988, it was a feat for Arabic language and literature when Nageeb Mahfuz was awarded Nobel Prize for his contribution to the field of Arabic novel. He said that Arabic is the official language of more than 22 Arab countries, fourth language of the world and sixth language of UNO. He added that the oil boom in 1920 converted the Arabian Desert into a golden hen.
Assistant Professor of the Department Mohammad Afhan said that the Arabic language and literature is not new for Indian soil and its history is old and its story is multilayered. He said that It contributed immensely in the development of Indian culture and society and still contributing in one way or other. “ Great scholars and valuable scholarly works in the field of Arabic language and literature is the live example of being Arabic a breathing, living and producing language, continuously without interruption at any time or moment in the history of India”, he added.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Dr Mazhar Alam, Dr Liaqet nair, Qari Manzoor Ahmed, Mehraj Khalid, Ishtiaq Ahmed Shah and Ayaz Ahmed Mohammad Shahid.
Following passing the resolution, it was sent to President of India by registered post and copied to Vice-President of India, Prime Minister of India, Minister of Human Resource Development, Chairman UPSC, Chancellor of BGSB University and CM J&K State, Chairman, Minority Commission, President, All India Association of Arabic Teachers & Scholors and Director, NCPUL for re-inducting both Arabic and Persian in the UPSC list.
