The condemnation of Bhutto’s assassination spans the globe from Washington DC, to Moscow, to London, to Paris, and many other locations. The United Nations has made a unanimous vote on Thursday to condemn Bhutto’s assassination. They have called Bhutto’s assassination an act that is reprehensible.
Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s President said he was pained by her death. He had called Ms. Bhutto a brave daughter of the Muslim world. “She sacrificed her life, for the sake of Pakistan and for the sake of this region,” Karzai said. He added: “I found in her this morning a lot of love and desire for peace in Afghanistan, for prosperity in Afghanistan and … Pakistan.”
India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that she was irreplaceable. He added that Ms. Bhutto was working to better the relations between the two countries that have nuclear arms.
Singh said: “In her death, the subcontinent has lost an outstanding leader, who worked for democracy and reconciliation in her country.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy had sent a letter to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf saying that this was an odious act. He added that terrorism and violence had no place in democratic debate.
“The United States strongly condemns this cowardly act by murderous extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan’s democracy,” US President George W. Bush had said to reporters. He adds: “We stand with the people of Pakistan in their struggle against the forces of terror and extremism.”
The US has been at the front of getting Bhutto and Musharraf to reconcile with each other.
“The difficult path toward peace and democracy in that region must not be stopped, and Bhutto’s sacrifice will serve as the strongest example for those who do not surrender to terrorism,” said Italian Premier Romano Prodi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Anatoly Safonov fears that her death will trigger violent backlash. “The already unstable situation in Pakistan will be further exacerbated by this powerful factor,” he said.
Carl Bilt, Sweden’s Foreign Minister called Bhutto’s assassination as bestial.
