After a tenure marked by assaults on the US Constitutional guarantees of liberty, controversy and partisanship by both himself and his hypocritical Democrat party critics, Bush appointee Alberto Gonzales has resigned as US Attorney-General. Goodbye and good riddance.
The Democrats have been hypocritical because they are no less involved in undermining the Constitution and in partisanship.
Who should replace Attorney-General Alberto Gonzales?
From my point of view as a Libertarian, it should be someone devoted to the US Constitution, the federal system and individual liberty.
I suggest former New Jersey judge Andrew Napolitano, author of Constitutional Chaos and The Constitution in Exile: How the Federal Government Has Seized Power by Rewriting the Supreme Law of the Land. He has been outstanding in his criticism of the overreach by this administration and the Clinton-Reno regime in trespassing on the constitutional guarantees of liberty best encapsulated in the first ten amendments that we call the Bill of Rights. He has written trenchantly on the criminal law, property rights, eminent domain and gun rights. His website is www.judgenap.com.
Former prosecutor and Georgia Republican Congressman Bob Barr saw the light after the abuses of the PATRIOT Act and other Bush administration initiatives became apparent. He has become a Libertarian, and now represents the Southeastern states on the Libertarian National Committee of the Libertarian Party (www.lp.org). Barr has become a vocal critic of the so-called PATRIOT Act and a consultant to the Marijuana Policy Project (www.mpp.org) and the American Civil Liberties Union. Once an opponent of state medical marijuana laws, his support for our federalist system led him to change his views. Barr has forcefully advocated our individual Second Amendment gun rights versus gun controls and property rights versus eminent domain abuse. His website is www.bobbarr.org.
Another good choice would be Federal judge Alex Kozinski in California. Unfortunately, that would mean depriving the Federal bench of one of its best members.
Less well-known is an outstanding attorney in Albany, New York named Warren Redlich www.redlichlaw.com. He has experience in both criminal law and zoning law.
Sheriff Bill Masters of Colorado would provide the law enforcement perspective of someone who respects individual liberty.
We need an Attorney-General who believes that the government should obey the law.
