In a weekend interview in Nigeria with the Reuters, British Black supermodel Naomi Campbell, expressed her willingness to continue ramp walk even after her successful career spanning two decades. While many of her contemporaries of late 80’s have bade goodbye to catwalks, the 38-year-old black beauty continues to turn heads at the world’s top fashion shows.
“I am very grateful to my career, but I worry for the (Black) girls after me and the opportunities they get and the way they are treated. And this is one of the reasons I still do what I do,” she told the interviewer. She felt that many fashion designers still favors white skinned models over their color-skinned sisters.
Campbell as a teenager was the first black model to adorn the covers of French and British editions of ‘Vogue’ magazine. In order to highlight this problem (of poor opportunities to black models) Italian ‘vogue’ decided to use mainly black models in its July’08 edition, which carries her photo on one of four different covers.
