I had written an article about a homebrew game for your PC that can also be ported to other game consoles known as "Beats of Rage." I had stumbled across another homebrew game. This one is also a 2D side-scrolling fighter. However, this one doesn’t use the BoR engine. A group of people calling themselves "Bomber Games" had created a free download called "Streets of Rage Remake."
The people at Bomber Games had made a perfect remake of the popular Streets of Rage series. Unlike Beats of Rage and the other mods that use fighting game sprites from Capcom, SNK-Playmore, and Sammy Studios, Streets of Rage Remake uses all the original sprites from all three Streets of Rage games. Bomber Games has done a good job taking sprites from all three games and using them to make a possible treasure in the future.
Streets of Rage Remix differs from all three SOR games is that the remake has multiple paths and multiple endings. It entices you to play the game over and over again. I had beaten this game a few times but have yet to unlock all the secrets. The Streets of Rage Remake is definitely worth checking out and you can download it from the Bomber Games website.
The best features in the SoR Remake is the combination of elements from Streets of Rage I, II, and III. You have the special moves from II and III along with being able to call police help which was available from SoR I. Most importantly to me is the ability to run and dash which helps getting out of tight spots.
It’s free to download. More than enough reason to check it out. Though my main turn-off is that I can’t play as Roo, the kangaroo from SoR III.
