He got bigger!! He got better!! He got older?? He must be on drugs. Barry Bonds has been at the epicenter of the ‘steroid era’ since the beginning of it all. But, what else could we expect to happen when one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history is sunken into the realm of the abyss and labeled ‘steroid user’.
Bonds, even though he never failed a drug test, will forever, rightly or wrongly, be associated with steroids. So, whether he made this bed or not he is laying in it and has no other options for now. And many would like to have it no other way. They wish that this distraction would just wash away and be forgotten. But that has now become an impossibility, especially with Bonds on the brink of breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record.
Every sport has had their chapters in dealing with drug use among its players. Bonds is just its largest figure to date. Lets face it they don’t get much bigger then Barry Bonds, and the bigger the star the bigger the contravercies. Bonds has become a whale in the pond of major league baseball. I have no aspurcions to cast on the innocence or guilt of Barry Bonds. I do not know him and i do not know what he does when he is alone. I assume that neither do most, including players, managers, fans, and the media.
So, as we let this home run chase play out, and let the steroid situation iron itself out(if possible), it will be interesting to see what all comes of this. Will baseball be changed? will records? will Bonds? No one knows the answers, yet.
