Sarawak,Malaysia:Saturday.
SAPE is a stringed musical instrument attributed to the natives of Sarawak,Malaysia.
Native groups such as Kayan,Kenyah,Kelabit,Murut and even the Penan claimed the Sape is theirs. Played at night after work and also at festivals, the Sape evoked a slow and almost melancholic sound. In the hands of experts, the sounds of the Sape can be rivetting.
In conjunction with the Baram regatta of 2008, this festival hopes to attract more people to the regatta which are usually held in the month of September.
The Baram regatta itself has an interesting history. when the natives of the upper reaches of the Baram river failed to stop their frequent squabblings, Charles Host, who was a British Resident at that time thought out a way to settle these conflicts. Thus, he negotiated with their headman and a regatta is proposed as a way to prove their manliness and at the same time promote peace.
This year, the State Ministry Of Social Development and Urbanisation is the overall coordinator of both the regatta and the festival.
There will also be an attempt to create a Malaysian record for the longest line of ethnic dancers.
