The acting boss of the independent Somali radio station known as Shabelle was killed on Friday night in Mogadishu. Bashir Nor Gedi who was the acting boss was killed as he was attacked outside his home by unknown militants armed with small-arms. This radio station has been under attack by the government and opposition groups in Somalia for quite some time.
To both groups, the radio station Shabelle has been under fire. Shabelle has criticized both the government and the opposition forces. Recently in September, Bashir along with eighteen others were arrested by government colleagues where they were questioned for hours.
Bashir Nor Gedi was killed when the four men attacked him which resulted in getting three times. He was hit in both the head and the chest. Bashir’s family was in the house when the incident happened. The younger brother Abdi-nasir Nor Gedi discovered Bashir’s body in a pool of blood after hearing cries for help.
According to the report, it seems that many in Somalia do not find it suprising that someone like Bashir was attacked and killed. Somalia’s transitional government was been accused by the Committee to Protect Journalists for the persecution of Somali reporters.
This is one radio station that has made enemies of both the government and opposition forces.
