Boxing Day Sales: The Bargain Rush

Everyone knows December 26th is Boxing Day. As usual, this is the day shops around the country offer special deals and special offers, and discounts up to 40%, up to 50%, up to 60%… up to 70% off the original price!

THE EXAMPLE OF CANARY WHARF

In Canary Wharf, East London, one of the Capital’s two main financial centres, people have been rushing to get the best bargains from most of the 280 shops in the shopping mall.

There is no secret when we talk about sales. First-come, first-served. So, you see here and there queues of people outside the shops, along the corridors, waiting for their turn to come and grab their fair share of bargains, that is, when it is not already all sold out! And don’t even think about jumping the line! You could suffer the wrath of the crowd!

WHO ARE THE BARGAIN HUNTERS?

Who would possibly swap a peaceful day off, at home with family and friends, on a grey and foggy day, with the long wait in a shopping mall or a shopping street?

Some tourists do. They are visiting London and don’t really mind spending a whole day out, waiting in lines to get a good price, especially in clothes shops. To them, it must be part of the “London Experience”. Tonight, they will Skype their friends and family overseas and tell them how they managed to buy cheap stuff in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Britons do it too. It is a bit of a tradition. We all know there are always some great deals out there on Boxing Day. However, is the waiting worth it? Most people will be in line to buy things they don’t actually need. Would they buy this jumper or that coat if it weren’t Boxing Day? No. But today, it is different. They are happy to wait. It’s Boxing Day. It’s THE tradition.

The traders are happy, the customers are happy, the tourists are happy… Happy Boxing Day then!
