The gap between dinner and breakfast is the longest break between meals that our body experiences. During this time the amount of glucose in our body continues to reduce. Glucose is important because it is the fuel that our brain uses to function. That includes all functions – from talking and walking to complex problem solving.
When we skip breakfast we increase the amount of time that our brain goes without being refueled. This impacts our body in a number of ways – our ability to think clearly, use logic, communicate and our temperament.
Studies have shown that children who eat a good breakfast tend to perform better in school, and have a better attendance and decreased hyperactivity. Children who don’t eat breakfast tend to perform not as well, and also tend to have behavior problems such as fighting, stealing, and not listening to their teachers (Dr. Ronald Kleinman, Harvard Medical School).
The results are relevant for adults too, with studies showing that people who eat breakfast tend to have a better attitude, more energy and are more productive throughout the day. Breakfast eaters of all ages show better problem solving ability and greatr concentration.
Another reason that breakfast is so important is that it provides an opportunity for us to contribute to our daily vitamin and mineral intake. People who do not eat breakfast are less likely to meet their Dialy Dietary Requirements than people who do eat breakfast.
