Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has been found guilty on all counts of his indictment today in Washington, D.C.
This verdict will make his run for re-election much more difficult if not impossible and may lead to his expulsion from the U.S. Senate. Stevens has been a Senator for 40 out of Alaska’s 50 years since achieving statehood. Although his convictions are on felony counts, he is not required to resign or to concede his re-election bid.
Senator Stevens’ opponent, Mark Begich, was polling at 0.4 points ahead before the guilty verdict, but is predicted to improve those numbers on the news.
Update:
Count 1: False Statements, Scheme – Stevens schemed to withhold informatio from Stevens’ Senate Financial Disclosure statements.
Counts 2-6: False Statements. Stevens lied on his Senate Financial Disclosure statements each year from 2001-2006.
