Prime Minister David Cameron issued a statement this afternoon regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden, the FBI’s most wanted man.
In the statement Cameron said:
"The news that Osama Bin Laden is dead will bring great relief to people across the world. Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the worst terrorist atrocities the world has seen – for 9/11 and for so many attacks, which have cost thousands of lives, many of them British."
The Prime Minister finished by saying:
"I congratulate President Obama and those responsible for carrying out this operation."
Bin Laden had been on the FBI’s most wanted list since the 1998 bomb attacks on US embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi which left 200 dead. The FBI page states that he was wanted for: "Murder of U.S. Nationals outside the United States; Conspiracy to Murder U.S. Nationals outside the United States; Attack on a Federal Facility Resulting in Death". A $25m award was being offered. The FBI page now has "deceased" written underneath the picture of Bin Laden.
The news broke early morning UK time. Social networks were among the first to pick up on the news with one Twitter user from Abbottabad picking up on the story when he heard a helicopter fly over although it was unclear at first what was happening.
An "Osama Bin Laden is DEAD" Facebook page has already been set up and has so far attracted more than 300,000 likes.
NATO has also issued a statement about the death of the Al-Qaeda leader. The NATO General Secretary said:
"I congratulate President Barack Obama and all those who made the operation against Osama Bin Laden possible. This is a significant success for the security of NATO Allies and all the nations which have joined us in our efforts to combat the scourge of global terrorism to make the world a safer place for all of us."
President Obama made the announcement that Bin Laden had been killed in an address to the nation last night. Obama began the address by stating:
“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children."
