Jammu, March 7 (Scoop News) – CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami has flayed the government for coming up with a directionless budget, which he said lacks roadmap to address the serious concerns of the economy.
Addressing a press conference, Tarigami termed the budget as replica of old story with no futuristic and visionary policy inputs to address the issues for improving our economy. He said the government has failed to provide food security despite its knowledge of non-availability of ration at sale depots. He said there is no mention of Universal Public Distribution System the state needed to tide over the problem of food shortage. A significant section of our population has not been covered under PDS for which budgetary support for procurement of food grains from open market should have been reflected in the budget.
He regretted that no measures have been taken towards strengthening agriculture sector- the mainstay of State’s economy, saying that due to lack of incentives in form of subsidy on fertilizers, loan on low interest rates and remunerative prices of the produce, the interest of the younger generation is gradually declining in this sector as a source of gainful employment. The old aged and widows continue to receive paltry sum of Rs. 400/- per month in the present days of high price escalation. Can we claim to be a welfare state when our most destitute section is left to lurch, he questioned?
Accusing the government of not releasing the margin money provided under SKEWPY and various other self employment schemes, he said it has failed to generate enthusiasm among the youth who continue to be deprived of employment avenues in the face of tall claims about their welfare. Even adhoc/contractuals have not been regularized despite enactment of law last year to this effect, he rued. A paltry increase in the wages of DRWs to Rs.125/- per day is not going to provide succor to them in view of price rise, he added that the workers in unorganized sector be brought under Minimum Wages Act.
He said that there is no mention regarding financial support to the business community especially transporters who have incurred huge losses due to summer unrest in the valley
