A bus driver was jailed a total of 57years and four months after he was found guilty of human trafficking.
A . Elangoran, from the town of Ipoh in the state of Perak,Malaysia, was arrested while driving a bus with 86 Myanmar nationals near the border with Thailand.
For each of the illegal immigrants on board his bus he was sentenced a total of eight months.
While he was negotiating the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Complex, an Immigration Department’s officer spotted his passengers and immediately stopped him.
From thereon he was remanded and an investigation was launched. it was then revealed that he knowingly picked his passengers inside Thailand and intend to drive them to Malaysia.
During the trial, A. Elangoran was represented by counsel S. Kuppusamy. Kuppusamy told the Magistrate Court that he [the accused] intend to launch an appeal to the High Court.
Magistrate Nabisha Ibrahim set a bail ofn RM15,000 in one surety and postponed the execution of the sentence.
