Calcutta High Court Intervenes in College Elections

In view of repeated failure of state administration under chief minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure free and fair elections in colleges, where students organization affiliated to Trinomul Congress (TMC) had been rampantly blocking submission of nominations by other student organizations- particularly the student’s wing of CPIM- to ensure smooth and uncontested wins and capture of power in students unions in various colleges, the Calcutta High Court directed on Wednesday that henceforth the college elections will be held under the supervision of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal who is normally responsible to conduct state assembly, parliamentary and state level panchayat and municipal polls only. The court also directed the Director General of police to provide all sorts of police assistance to CEO on day to day basis whenever college

This is the second time that the high court has intervened in a short span of 9 months of formation of government by Mamata Banerjee, during which period the law and order situation deteriorated considerably resulting in spate of rape cases, killing of two CPIM senior leaders (one of them being an Ex-Legislative Assembly member) by TMC supporters and other forms crimes.

The high court directed Crime Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal to conduct the investigation on the murder of two CPIM leaders under its (high court’s) own supervision as it probably appeared to the court that the state government is not serious enough in conducting the murder probe of the slain leaders. The CID will be reporting to the high court directly regarding the progress in this murder case investigations.
