During a period of four years in the 1970s when the Khmer Rouge was in power, it is believed that about two million Cambodians died. The infamous Killing Fields are a historic example of the many lives were lost during its rule.
The Khmer Rouge has targeted numerous religious institutions. They attacked Christian churches, Buddhist temples, and Muslim mosques. As a result, both Muslim and Christian leaders joined the Buddhist monks and nuns in their support for tribunal against the Khmer Rouge leaders.
They have come from all around Cambodia and marched to the special courts located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The courts welcomed them. They also granted the marchers a question and answer session with officials.
During their four years in power, the Khmer Rouge defrocked Buddhist monks by force and closed down temples. Muslims were slaughtered as they refused to renounce their faith. Many Christian churches were destroyed.
Most of the population of Cambodia is Buddhist.
The special courts will have legal officials from all over the world. The tribunal will appeal to the world for millions of dollars in extra funding for the trails. Without the money, the trials could be halted.
