Cancer bacterium may shield kids from asthma

A bacteria that could cause stomach cancer in adults may protect children from developing asthma, according to a study.

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori has co-existed with the humans for at least 50,000 years and can lead to peptic ulcers and stomach cancer.

However, kids between ages of 3 and 13 are nearly 59 percent less likely to have asthma if they carry the bacterium, according to the study among 7000 subjects led by New York University School of Medicine.
