Scholarship Applications Due by March 15, 2011
Wheat Ridge, Colo. (February 21, 2011) – Colorado Parks and Recreation Association’s Cancer Fitness Institute, formerly Summit Cancer Solutions, is offering 20 scholarships for low-income breast cancer survivors to participate in the Summit Cancer exercise program at 10 Front Range recreation centers.
The Summit Cancer exercise program is a six-month, individualized exercise program run out of community recreation centers and includes a complimentary six-month recreation center pass. The scholarship funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to low-income breast cancer survivors who apply by March 15, 2011.
Breast cancer survivors should contact the recreation center with which they are interested in enrolling directly for application to the program. The program currently operates in Arvada, Centennial, Denver, Evergreen, Fort Collins, Lakewood, Littleton, Parker, and Wheat Ridge. Cancer survivors have specific exercise needs, including the avoidance or management of lymphedema, surgery site limitations and side effects from chemotherapy. The Summit Cancer exercise program provides fitness assessments and a personalized exercise prescription, one-on-one professional exercise guidance by a degreed exercise physiologist with additional certification in cancer and exercise, participation in exercise classes just for cancer survivors, and personal training.
The Summit Cancer exercise program is open to adults of all ages and fitness levels. Participants are both men and women who have survived every type of cancer. With more than 1,400 individuals who have participated in the program, the Summit Cancer exercise program’s impact is substantial for the Colorado cancer community.

The Cancer Fitness Institute is a program of the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA), which offers training in the turnkey Summit Cancer exercise program to recreation professionals and facilities.
