Cannabis destined for international market intercepted

Twenty one bags destined for international market and weighing 90 kilogrammes each were this week intercepted by Police  in  Central Region of Malawi, it has been learned.

A syndicate of drug dealers buy cannibis and use trucks going to South AFrica to ferry the drug. It is alleged the drugs are taken to Europe and United States of America.

A Police source said in an interview the twenty one bags were in a lorry covered with tarpauline .The lorry was destined for Zambia,a neighbour of  Malawi on the western part.

THe Police source said when the drug dealers saw the Police coming near their lorry, they fled leaving the lorry with the cannabis bags intact.

The Police say they are still tracking down the drug dealers who are still at large.

Cannabis is illegally grown in Nkhatabay in Northern Malawi and Nkhotakota in Central Malawi.Most of the areas it is grown are not accesible by road. Most of the areas are game resesrves with different kinds of animals.

Southern Africa Development Community has set up a program in each country to ensure dangerous drugs are eliminated.However, the problem of drugs stil continue.
