On Wednesday, the US Navy fired Captain David C. Dykhof, the top commander of the nuclear powered aircraft carrier the USS George Washington.
According to the Navy’s statement, Captain David C. Dykhof was fired because of a "loss of confidence in his ability to command and his failure to meet mission requirements and readiness standards."
This firing comes after the USS George Washington suffered a damaging fire May that was caused by a crew member smoking near improperly stored flammables. The caused a stir in Japan where the USS George Washington is scheduled to be docked come September.
The Japanese hosts were impressed by the Navy’s decisive action in firing David C. Dykhof. They were on edge about the possibility of hosting a nuclear-powered ship, the first US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be stationed abroad, before the fire. Despite public outcry in the port city of Yokosuka, the Japanese will allow the USS George Washington to dock at their port.
