People wear clothes to suit the weather
In summer, loose –fitting cotton clothes keep the body cool. Air circulates freely through cotton and so a person feels cooler. They also absorb sweat easily and not irritate the skin. The color of the clothes is also important. While or light-colored clothes suit the hot weather because they reflect the heat of the sun’s rays falling on them and do not get heated. So, people wear white or light-colored cotton clothes in summer. Cambric, lawn poplin and Khadi are good for in summer. People living in very hot countries wear very little clothing.
In winter, people wear and thick clothes and cover most of the parts of the body. Clothes made of fur or wool keeps the body warm.
These clothes keep the body warm because they do not allow body-heat to escape. Dark –colored clothes are also worn in winter as they absorb heat from the sun’s rays falling n them. So, they quickly become warm.
Care of clothes
Clothes protect our bodies and are very expensive. So, we must take good care of them. Proper care of clothes will make them last longer and serve us better. Clothes should be washed, dried and mended regularly.
Cotton clothes should be properly washed to remove dirt and grease. They should be washed with good washing soap or any detergent, or washing power, or with washing soda.
The clothes should be properly dampened before ironing. This helps proper ironing. Silk clothes should be washed with mild, good quality soap or should preferably be dry –cleaned so that the fibers may not get damaged. They should be dried in shade because direct rays of the sun make silk fibers shrink as they dry.
Woolen clothes must be dry-cleaned and not washed with water. Petrol and carbon tetrachloride are used for dry-cleaning of woolen clothes.
Sometimes, our clothes get stained. Fresh stains can easily be removed by proper means. Tea and coffee stains can be removed by using talcum powder or oxalic acid.
Insects can destroy woolen and silk clothes by attacking their fibers. The greatest damage to these clothes is caused by insects like silverfish because they feed on them. So, we must take special care of our silk and woolen clothes.
Once the season is over, the clothes must be duty dried in the sun and cooled or they must be dry-cleaned before being packed. To protect them, naphthalene ball or dry neem leaves should be placed between the layers of woolen clothes. The cupboards of boxes should be sprayed with DDT before storing woolen clothes in them. These keep the insects away.
