Mothers and fathers who leave their children unsupervised in hotel rooms or parks so that they can drink, gamble or shop will face up to three years behind bars under a proposed Australian state law. The law, which would apply in the north-eastern state of Queensland, would mean police could charge parents if children under 12 were left unattended for an “unreasonable amount of time,” the attorney general, Mr Kerry Shine, said on Sunday.
The attorney general said under the current Queensland law police are only able to issue a warning to parents who leave their children unsupervised. “Most parents of course do the right thing, but some are known to leave children, for example, in hotel rooms or in car parks,” he added. Mr Shine said he would take the proposal to the Queensland government’s cabinet next week
