Over the past several months, there have been on and off talks of a possible Democratic joint-ticket between Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Senator Hillary Clinton of New York. Many have talked about the idea. Several months ago, NBA legends Magic Johnson and Sir Charles Barkley even weighed in. Johnson’s dream ticket is Clinton-Obama while Barkley’s dream ticket is Clinton-Obama.
Talks of such a ticket have generated much buzz and hype. With Obama as the presumptive Democratic nominee, there have been more talks about it. Clinton has said that she is open to be Obama’s VP running mate. But, not everybody has bought into the hype.
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California is not one of those people buying into it. She said that an Obama-Clinton or Clinton-Obama ticket is not going to happen. Pelosi had criticized such an idea of a joint-ticket between the two.
There are those that say that an Obama-Clinton ticket would not be a smart move. Recently, former US President Jimmy Carter had spoken about the possibility even more. Carter told a newspaper in London that an Obama-Clinton ticket would be suicidal. He said that it would bring the negative aspects of both Obama and Clinton together. Carter did imply a few weeks ago that the GOP would tear an Obama-Clinton ticket to shreds.
“If you take that 50 percent who just don’t want to vote for Clinton and add it to whatever element there might be who don’t think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he’s got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds,” Carter explained to the newspaper.
Carter stressed that there are better VP candidates than Clinton. Yesterday, Carter had given his endorsement to Obama. On the same day, the RNC sent a YouTube video clip of a 2006 interview with Carter, who criticized Obama back then.
So far, Carter has openly criticized an Obama-Clinton ticket. He has stressed that Obama should pick someone like former Democratic Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia.
In the case of Obama, it’s time to shop for a VP.
