Cases of gold chain snatching rise in India

Few days back, Kerala was in news for the interest of its people in the yellow metal. Despite the increase in gold price, the demand for it has increased manifold. Especially in the marriage season and auspicious occasions, there is heavy rush in the gold shops.

Now-a-days, snatching chains from the necks of women is a new passion in crime and perpetrators commit it in broad day light. This is continuing throughout India, where motor-bike borne criminals snatch gold chains even in extreme daring situations.

In a crowded street at Bhubaneswar, a policeman’s wife was walking on a heavily crowded street, unaware that two youths were following her in a motor bike. While the bike stopped, the pillion riding youth got down and followed the lady. Then he swooped on her and made her fall on the street while snatching away the gold-chain from her neck.

The lady grappled with the snatcher and even she was dragged to some distance, when she kept pulling the back of the bike. Although this incident took place at 10 A.M. in the morning in the presence of hundreds of passers-by, no body dared to stop the snatchers.

Gold taken away in this fashion easily gets sold in the market. It is because any gold jewellery can be melted easily and the molten lump of gold easily finds way to some unscrupulous buyers in the market at much lesser than the market price.
