A Catholic nun, Ms Jessy Kurian of St Ann’s in the city, has become the first church woman to get the Vatican’s nod to work for a government wing. The Kerala native has been appointed member of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions by Minister for Human Resources Development Mr Arjun Singh.
Ms Kurian also has the distinction of being the first nun to be a member of the Supreme Court Bar. The office of Member of NCMEI being a full time job, the 46-year-old nun will be stationed in New Delhi until her term ending December 5, 2009. "Sister Jessy is a practising advocate in Supreme Court. She got the clearance from the highest authorities of the Roman Catholic Church. Probably she is the first nun to hold an office in a government wing where she will be paid a salary," Hyderabad Archbishop M. Joji told this newspaper.
Ms Kurian graduated from the Kerala University, did her Bachelor of Education from Osmania University, post graduation from Kakatiya University, M.Ed. at Madurai and LLB from Bangalore. Ms Kurian worked as the head of the school in Secunderabad and left in 2001. She was enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Delhi in 2005. Ms Kurian has written books on acts of domestic violence, dowry prohibition, right to information, Hindu succession, sexual harassment of women at workplace, rural development scheme and one titled Know Your Advocate.
