Review – Corvid
Self-titled EP
Independent
"DOCTOR’S ORDERS!"
Certainly, on a different tip we’re betting Vancouver’s Corvid will raise the stakes in the one–man emcee/producer stratosphere.
Lead track “Spit Venom” grabs the bull by the horns, and twists its head off. Straight hardcore Hip-Hop – very un-Vancity if I may say so. This is good. Small tinge of Milk D in the throat dept. giving a NYC feel to a quasi-old school head-nodder.
Jumping from roots-reggae styling, to what could only be termed as “Industrial Trip-Hop”, Corvid has succeeded in breaking barriers between the genre sheets, making this six–track EP – a homegrown gem.
Grime influenced, Indica-induced samples coupled with Corvid’s well-crafted spits and spatters about life on the “Other” West Coast, make this emcee (and crew – 49th Peril) one to watch in 07. With an abundance of coffee houses scattered through our fair town, one would think the local Hip-Hop scene would have woken up by now to the sumptuous aroma of the beats that are percolating on this CD.
