On March 31 2014 Rep. Jackie Speier of San Mateo, California sent me the following email communication regarding Cesar Chavez.
Cesar Chavez (born César Estrada Chávez, locally: [ˈsesaɾ esˈtɾaða ˈtʃaβes]; March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist, who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union, UFW):
“César Chávez would have turned 87 today. His legacy of fighting against discrimination and for the rights of agricultural workers in California and around the country will live on forever. His spirit inspires me to keep fighting for concrete actions that will uphold the dignity of all. Yes, we can fix our broken immigration system, uphold voting rights, raise the minimum wage and restore emergency unemployment insurance. ¡Sí, se puede!” Rep. Jackie Speier.
Note: Cesar was born near Yuma, Arizona, on March 31, 1927.
Rep. Jackie Speier serves on the powerful Committee on Oversight and Government Reform where she is Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Healthcare, and Entitlements; and the House Armed Services Committee, including a subcommittee that authorizes procurement and R&D programs to ensure that America’s soldiers and airmen are fully equipped to carry out their mission to keep our nation safe. Rep. Speier is also a member of her party’s leadership team as Senior Whip, working within the Democratic caucus to push issues that will create jobs and strengthen the middle class. She is arguably one of the most influential member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
