Mrs. Rajani Suram is a social worker who helps poor children in the Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh. Together with her husband, Mr. Shoury Babu Rebba she founded the NGO “Kiranmayi Socio-Educational Society” (KISES) in 1999. They began their work with tribal people and Dalits in the villages of farmers and fishermen in the island villages in Edurumondi in Krishna.
They completed successfully a water and sanitation project for mothers and children (MCH-“mother and child”) in twenty villages, in which they reached full participation of women, especially in run-down communities. In the last years they built two homes for children of migrant workers and for 55 school dropout children from tribal people, who had to make a living on the dump. In Pedapatnam they built a health care centre for 36 000 people from the surrounding 25 coastal villages with the financial help of Terre des Hommes (Lausanne, Switzerland), in which there will also be a mother and child program.
The main goal of this program is to give underprivileged children like the handicapped, orphans and children of migrant workers shelter, food, education, healthcare and possibility for recreation in their spare time. It will provide parental care and the constitutional right for education, and thus save the children from exploitation by giving them shelter. The children will at least finish elementary school, even when their migrant worker parents are away for a long time in search for jobs.
